Overview

  • What is IT Infrastructure Library?

The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a library of volumes describing a framework of best practices for delivering IT services. The ITIL has gone through several revisions in its history and currently comprises five books, each covering various processes and stages of the IT service lifecycle. The ITIL, currently ITIL v3, focuses on business and IT integration, and ITIL certifications can be earned at five levels. ITIL’s systematic approach to IT service management can help businesses manage risk, strengthen customer relations, establish cost-effective practices, and build a stable IT environment that allows for growth, scale and change

  • Why do organizations need IT Infrastructure Library?

IT organizations are faced with a rapidly evolving environment coupled with a more headcount constrained staff, where standardization on optimal systems and procedures is a critical success factor. The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) serves as the worldwide de facto standard for the delivery of high quality IT services & puts heavy emphasis on the integration of IT in the business

Framework

ITIL service management provides a comprehensive standard for how to set-up and manage IT Services. Formed by the core IT Services strategy, it provides a framework for:

  • Service Design – Availability, Scope, Suppliers
  • Service Transition – Configuration, QA, Knowledge management
  • Service Operation – incidents, Changes, Events and Analysis

The entire framework aims to measure, benchmark and improve as well as it provides a format that makes it easier to manage complex transitions and organisational changes.

The continuous improvement that surrounds ITIL is in a way a LEAN approach, Kaizen, in Japanese, aiming to at all times improve the processes in place and to leverage the opportunities of improvement at hand.

Many companies who have adopted ITIL are running it based a more strict interpretation, which sometimes makes the processes of IT service management to heavy to handle effectively.

Who is this for?

ITIL is used by organizations in all industries and sectors, including large, medium, and small companies and even universities. ITIL can benefit any organization that provides an IT service management (ITSM) product or service

Since ITIL is a set of best practices and not a standard, organizations are free to adopt as much of the ITIL framework as is valuable to them. However, the more ITIL-compliant an organization’s processes are, the greater it benefits the organization.

Benefits

In addition to increasing and improving effectiveness and efficiency, improving interaction and functioning within the IT department and with the business and customer community, few other benefits of ITIL are:

  • ITIL is proven and used worldwide
  • Quality of service
  • Improved customer satisfaction and relationships
  • Competitive advantage through value creation and agile change
